What you can filter

Any of these can be a card with two handles. County measures come from the source named after them; measures marked (state) are state-level facts applied to every county in that state.

Two more card types are built on the spot. Your own words turns a plain-English request into a blend of existing measures, scored 0 to 100 by each county's percentile rank on every measure in the blend. Places like takes one or more counties you name and scores every other county by how close it sits to them in percentile terms across the measures you pick.

How the map works

The figures behind every card sit in a county database covering all 3,143 counties and about 200 measures, refreshed each night from the same sources the county pages cite. Values outside a measure's plausible range, such as Census suppression codes, are dropped rather than plotted. Each card's histogram uses 30 equal-width bins between that measure's 1st and 99th percentile across all counties, so a few outliers cannot flatten the chart. A new card opens on the better 60 percent of counties (from the 40th percentile up, or down for measures where lower is better). The heat map colors run from the 5th to the 95th percentile. A county lights up when it passes every active card; a card you mark as a priority counts double in the shading for near misses.
