Daily Maps

One map a day, from real county data

Every map here is built from the same sourced and dated figures the rest of the site runs on, for all 3,143 counties. Each one links to the live map with the same filters, so you can change the question and see what moves. 7 so far. Every map, by month.

How a daily map is made

Each map starts as a question with a numeric answer: which counties still rent a two-bedroom for under $900, where the median home costs six years of the median income, which places are sunny and still cheap. We set the ranges on the county map, count the counties inside them, and write down what the count shows, including which state has the most and which large counties make the cut. The picture is the live map drawn with the site's fill scheme: solid navy for a county inside every range, dotted for one that misses a range, hatched where a county reports no figure for a measure.

Every figure comes from the county database behind the rest of the site: Census population and household income, Zillow home values, HUD fair market rents, County Health Rankings crime and health measures, NOAA temperatures and USDA amenity scores, each stored with the year it was published. The sources for one map are listed under it, and the count in its title is the count on the day it ran. 7 maps have been published so far; the latest, "Counties most dependent on oil and gas jobs", ran on September 17, 2026.
