How the machine works
The reel holds all 3,213 counties the data covers. Each drop picks one with probability equal to its share of the people living in them (Census population estimates), so Los Angeles County comes up about once in 33 drops and a county of 900 people almost never. The reel then runs past every county once and stops on the pick. Nothing about the pick depends on you, your location or your history. The county page you land on is the same story every reader of that county sees: income, home prices, property tax, crime, schools, health, neighbors, weather and getting around, each figure ranked against every other county that reports it, with the source listed at the end.
Where the odds come from
The weights are the Census Bureau's 2023 county population estimates, the same figures that set the population floor on the county rankings. Added up across the reel they come to 330,758,658 people. The 100 most populous counties hold 42 percent of them, so most drops land somewhere urban or suburban, which is where most Americans live. At the other end, Kalawao County, HI has 50 residents and the same slim chance of coming up that its residents have of being picked from the whole country. A county with no population figure is left off the reel rather than given a made-up weight.
What you read when you land
The county page tells the story in the county's own numbers, each ranked against every other county that reports the same measure: median household income and poverty from the Census American Community Survey, home values from Zillow 2024, two-bedroom rents from the same survey and from HUD fair market rents, property tax from the Tax Foundation, violent crime, life expectancy and childcare cost from County Health Rankings 2024, school test scores as national z-scores, hospital ratings from CMS, broadband speed from Ookla, temperature from NOAA and the 2024 presidential margin from the county returns. Where a county does not report a measure, the page says so instead of filling the gap.
