Kentucky holds one of the most consequential fishing records in the world. Dale Hollow Lake on the Tennessee border produced the world-record smallmouth bass — 11 pounds 15 ounces — and the lake consistently grows fish over 6 and 7 pounds. Lake Cumberland, the largest federal reservoir east of the Mississippi by water volume, holds lake trout, muskie, striped bass, and walleye. Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley in the far west are top tournament bass destinations on the Tennessee River system.
The Cumberland River tailwater below Wolf Creek Dam is the premier trout fishery in the state, stocked with rainbow and brown trout in cold, clear water. The Licking, Red, and Green Rivers hold smallmouth bass in rocky, float-trip-accessible stretches.
Resident licenses cost $23. Kentucky is well positioned for year-round fishing. Winter on Dale Hollow for trophy smallmouth is a recognized fishery among smallmouth specialists. Guide services on Dale Hollow and Lake Cumberland are professional and experienced. If smallmouth bass are your species, Dale Hollow is one of the top three lakes in the world for them.
