North Carolina has mountain-to-coast fishing diversity in a single state. The western mountains — the Nantahala, Hiwassee, South Holston — hold wild and stocked trout, with the Delayed Harvest program providing quality fishing through fall and winter. The New River, one of the oldest rivers in the world, flows north through Ashe County with excellent smallmouth bass in boulder-strewn runs.
The Outer Banks are a storied surf fishing destination. Red drum — over 40 and 50 pounds — are caught from the beaches of Cape Hatteras in fall. Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and flounder are accessible from the barrier island beaches and sounds.
Resident licenses cost $25. North Carolina is a state with real fishing across multiple disciplines. The mountain trout fishery is strong and managed conservatively. The Outer Banks drum fishing draws serious surf anglers from up and down the East Coast. For a southeastern state, the top-to-bottom fishing quality is genuine.
North Carolina spans from Atlantic Coast redfish and flounder to Blue Ridge mountain trout streams, giving it one of the most diverse fishing portfolios of any state. The New River is one of the oldest rivers in the world and offers exceptional smallmouth bass.
