California's scale means wildly different fishing experiences depending on where you live. The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta holds the largest inland striped bass fishery in the United States. Clear Lake near Lakeport is world-famous for largemouth bass. The Pacific coast offers halibut, salmon, and rockfish. The Sierra Nevada streams hold wild trout in granite-carved rivers.
The regulations are complex and change frequently. Salmon seasons on the coast are set annually based on stock assessments and can be very restrictive or closed entirely. Delta striped bass face ongoing pressure from water diversion politics. Budget time to read the annual fishing report before each season.
Resident licenses cost $54, among the higher fees nationally. California fishing is genuinely world-class in pockets, but you are paying for access to a system under real environmental stress. The North Coast rivers — Klamath, Trinity, Eel — can be exceptional for steelhead and salmon when runs are healthy.
California's Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is the largest tidal estuary on the West Coast and one of the best striped bass fisheries in the country. Clear Lake is California's largest natural lake and a world-famous largemouth bass destination.
