Kentucky has no commercial or tribal casinos, which makes it unusual among states that have legalized sports betting. The state authorized mobile sports betting in 2023 and launched in September of that year, just in time for the NFL season. The major apps — DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM — all operate in the state. This made Kentucky one of the few states with fully legal mobile sports betting and zero casinos.

Horse racing is the defining gambling tradition. The Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs is the most famous horse race in the country, run every first Saturday in May since 1875. Keeneland in Lexington and other tracks operate year-round meets. Historical horse racing (HHR) machines, which function like slot machines but use outcomes from historical races, are legal and widely distributed at race tracks and off-track betting locations across the state.

For residents, the practical picture is distinctive. You can bet on sports through an app on your phone. You can play historical horse racing machines at multiple locations around the state. Live horse racing is accessible and culturally central. But there is no casino with table games or traditional slot machines. Online casino gambling is not legal. Kentucky offers a narrow but real gambling footprint built around its historic racing identity.
