Alabama sits among the top bass states in the country. Lake Guntersville has been named Bassmaster's number one bass lake multiple times, producing largemouth in the 10-pound range regularly. Catfish and crappie fill out the freshwater calendar, and the Gulf Coast gives you access to saltwater species — red snapper, flounder, speckled trout — within a few hours of most population centers.
The fishing calendar runs year-round. Alabama winters are mild enough that bass stay active, and summer catfishing on the Tennessee River can be exceptional. The White River and Cahaba River systems hold smallmouth in the northern part of the state that most people overlook.
If you move here, a resident license costs $14. That covers freshwater statewide. You will want a separate saltwater license if you plan to fish the coast. The infrastructure is good — boat ramps, bait shops, guide services on Guntersville are plentiful. This is a state where serious bass anglers move on purpose.
Lake Guntersville on the Tennessee River produces some of the largest largemouth bass in the country and has hosted multiple Bassmaster Elite events.
