West Virginia is defined by two great rivers. The New River — despite the name, it is one of the oldest rivers on earth, flowing north through a National River gorge — is a world-class smallmouth bass fishery. The rocky rapids, deep pools, and clear water of the New produce bass that fight with unusual intensity. The Gauley River, joining the New at Gauley Bridge, adds to the smallmouth opportunity and holds muskie in its lower reaches.
The Greenbrier River flowing through the southeastern part of the state is recognized as one of the cleanest rivers in Appalachia — wild brown and rainbow trout in a mountain setting accessible from the Greenbrier Valley.
Resident licenses cost $19. West Virginia is an underrated fishing state that receives far less attention than neighboring Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. The New River canyon smallmouth fishery is genuinely world-class — float trips through the gorge section rival anything in the region for bass fishing. The cost of living and the license fees are both low, and the fishing quality is not.
The New River and Greenbrier River are two of the cleanest and most productive rivers in the Appalachian region. The New River's smallmouth bass fishing is world-class — float trips through the gorge are a bucket-list experience. Affordable licenses ($19 resident) and remote access make West Virginia a hidden gem.
