Worth knowing before you move to Minnesota
Minnesota has a graduated income tax that reaches 9.85%, taxes Social Security above income thresholds, and has an estate tax with a $3 million exemption. In exchange it ranks near the top in health outcomes, school results and household income, and the Twin Cities metro holds more Fortune 500 headquarters per capita than any other. Winters are long and cold.
What Minnesota taxes, and what it doesn't
Minnesota levies a graduated income tax that tops out at 9.85%. A household earning $75,000 pays an effective 6.2%, about $4,640 a year; at $150,000 the effective rate is 6.8%. Among the 41 states that tax income, Minnesota has the 4th highest effective rate at $100,000 of income.

Life expectancy is 79.4 years (County Health Rankings 2024). 4.5% of residents have no health insurance, and the state has expanded Medicaid. The Commonwealth Fund's 2023 scorecard ranks Minnesota's health system 2nd of 50.

Politics, guns and social policy
Politically, Minnesota is a competitive state that went to Harris by 4 points in 2024.
On guns, concealed-carry permits are shall-issue, a permit is required to buy a handgun, and Giffords grades the state's gun laws B.
Abortion is protected by state law. Marijuana is legal for adults. Minnesota is not a right-to-work state, and the minimum wage is $10.85 an hour.
