Wisconsin is the Muskie Capital of the World — the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame is in Hayward for a reason. The Chippewa Flowage north of Hayward holds muskellunge that grow into the 50-inch class. The Cisco Chain, the Manitowish Waters, and the St. Croix River add to the muskie opportunity across the northern third of the state. Lake Winnebago in the east holds walleye, perch, and lake sturgeon — the sturgeon spearing season in February is a Wisconsin-specific cultural event.
Green Bay on Lake Michigan produces walleye, perch, and smallmouth bass. The Wolf River holds brown trout and smallmouth bass in its upper reaches.
Resident licenses cost $20. Wisconsin has 15,000 lakes and 84,000 miles of rivers. The muskie fishing culture here is serious and well-resourced. Ice fishing culture in winter is fully operational and deeply embedded in the community calendar. If you move to northern Wisconsin, your social life will eventually involve fishing, regardless of where you started.
Wisconsin is universally recognized as the muskie capital of the world. Hayward hosts the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame. Lake Winnebago's walleye fishing is exceptional and draws anglers from across the Midwest. Wisconsin's 15,000 lakes, 84,000 miles of rivers, and 5,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline give it one of the highest concentrations of fishable water anywhere.
