Idaho holds some of the most significant wild fish populations remaining in the lower 48. The Clearwater River and Snake River system support the last meaningful wild steelhead runs south of Canada. Henry's Fork of the Snake near Island Park is one of the most written-about dry-fly rivers in the world — demanding, technical, and capable of producing rainbow trout over 20 inches with some regularity.
Chinook salmon return to the Salmon River drainage after a 900-mile migration from the Pacific — one of the longest anadromous fish migrations in the world. Cutthroat trout in the high mountain lakes of the Frank Church Wilderness require backpacking to access, but they are there and they are wild.
Resident licenses cost $14. If you move to Idaho for fishing, you are making a decision rooted in wild fish and wild country. The steelhead situation on the Clearwater fluctuates with run strength and regulations — check before you plan a season. The Snake River bordering Oregon holds trophy smallmouth bass that most people outside the region do not know about.
Idaho's Henry's Fork of the Snake River is a pilgrimage destination for dry-fly trout anglers worldwide. The Clearwater and Snake rivers support some of the last remaining wild steelhead runs in the lower 48. Resident license costs ($14) are among the lowest in the West.
