South Dakota has a distinctive gambling identity anchored by Deadwood, a historic gold rush town in the Black Hills that voted to legalize limited-stakes gambling in 1989. Dozens of casinos operate in Deadwood, making it a genuine destination in the western part of the state. The stakes limits that existed for years have been raised, and the casinos now offer blackjack, poker, slot machines, and sports betting. Mobile sports betting is legal statewide. The lottery has operated since 1987, and video lottery terminals are distributed widely across bars and restaurants throughout the state.
Tribal casinos operate on Lakota and other Native American reservations, including Prairie Wind Casino on the Pine Ridge Reservation and Royal River Casino in eastern South Dakota operated by the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe.
For residents, gambling is accessible and culturally present. Video lottery terminals in bars are common across the state. Deadwood is the primary destination for a casino experience, though a trip from Sioux Falls requires a five-hour drive. Mobile sports betting is available through licensed apps. South Dakota is one of the few states that has combined a historic brick-and-mortar gambling district with a fully legal statewide mobile sports betting market.
