Sports betting is legal in Colorado, one of 36 states where it is, as of May 2026. Commercial casinos are legal, as they are in 24 states, and online casino gambling is illegal. Colorado has a state lottery, and horse racing is legal.

Colorado legalized sports betting in May 2019 and launched in May 2020. The market is fully mobile, meaning residents can bet through apps like DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM from anywhere in the state. Commercial casinos are legal but geographically restricted by a 1990 voter initiative to three historic mountain towns: Central City, Black Hawk, and Cripple Creek. Black Hawk has the most concentrated casino district, with properties like Ameristar, Isle, and Monarch all within a few miles of each other. The drive from Denver takes about an hour.

The state lottery has been operating since 1983. Horse racing at Arapahoe Park in Aurora is the primary live racing venue. The restriction on casino locations was a deliberate preservation decision for those historic mining towns, and it has created a situation where large-scale casino development is essentially impossible outside those three communities.

For residents, sports betting is fully accessible by phone. If you want a casino experience, the Black Hawk corridor is the main destination. Online casino gambling is not legal in Colorado, which means you cannot play slots or table games for real money through a licensed state operator. The casinos in Black Hawk are real but geographically concentrated — a weekend trip rather than a neighborhood option for most of the state.
