Louisiana is a saltwater and warmwater fishing powerhouse. The coastal marshes surrounding the Atchafalaya Basin, the Barataria Basin, and the Mississippi Delta hold redfish and speckled trout in numbers that draw anglers from across the country. Redfish in the shallow marsh on a fly rod or with a popping cork is the defining Louisiana fishing experience. Toledo Bend Reservoir on the Texas border is a national bass tournament destination that produces largemouth bass in the 8 to 10-pound range consistently.
The freshwater options extend well beyond Toledo Bend. The Atchafalaya River system is a 140-mile floodplain holding catfish, bass, and crappie in backwater lakes. The Red River holds blue catfish over 80 pounds.
Resident licenses cost $9, one of the least expensive in the nation. If you move here, you will encounter people who fish multiple days per week and who know water that is not on any map. The coastal marsh fishing is world-class by any objective measure. Access requires a boat for most of the best spots. Guide services in the Venice and Grand Isle areas are excellent for both inshore and offshore trips.
