How the quiz ranks states
The quiz asks 5 questions about money, weather, politics and how you want to live. Each answer adds points to one or more of 7 profiles (The Retiree, The Tax Exile, The Remote Worker, The Family Builder, The FIRE Seeker, The Progressive, The Patriot), and the profile with the most points at the end is yours. Nothing about you is sent anywhere; the answers stay in your browser, and no account is needed.
Your profile is a preset for the same scoring engine that ranks states on the homepage: it sets the sliders and their weights, and every state is then scored on its own figures, including the effective income tax rate at a given income rather than the top bracket, the effective property tax rate, the cost of living index, violent crime, the K-12 and health-system ranks, sunny days and the 2024 presidential margin. A profile that cares about retirement income weights the tax on Social Security and pensions; one that cares about schools weights the Education Week rank. State figures were last checked 2026-09-14 (tax rates are tax year 2026), and you can move any slider after loading the preset, so the quiz is a starting point rather than a verdict.
