Live or Die Here
WHERE IS THIS?
How the puzzle works
One state is the answer each day, and everyone who plays that day gets the same one: the puzzle is chosen from a bank of 62 by the day of the year, so there is nothing to refresh for. Four clues are revealed one at a time, each a fact drawn from the state's data on this site: its tax structure, crime rate, climate, gun laws, migration or economy. You pick from four states after any clue; a wrong pick reveals the next clue, and a wrong pick after the fourth clue ends the round at 0. A correct guess scores 5 minus the number of clues you needed, so 4 points for a first-clue win and 1 point if you needed all four. Your result stays in your browser, and the share text carries only the day number and your score.
Every clue can be checked: the answer links to the state's profile, where the tax rates, crime figures, climate and law entries the clues were written from are listed with their sources and years. If a clue reads wrong against the profile, the profile is the record and the clue is the bug. The comparison pages put the answer next to the state you guessed.
