Georgia has no casinos and no legal sports betting. The state lottery has operated since 1993 and is genuinely significant: it funds the HOPE Scholarship program, which has sent hundreds of thousands of Georgia students to in-state colleges at reduced or no cost. That lottery success has made the state comfortable with one form of gambling while keeping a hard line on everything else.

Sports betting legislation has been introduced in the Georgia General Assembly multiple times without passing. The sticking points are debate over which entities get licenses, how revenue is distributed, and whether the state constitution requires a voter referendum to authorize casino gambling. Passage has come close but not succeeded.

For residents, the situation is simple: there is no legal mobile sportsbook, no casino within the state, no card room. The closest commercial casinos are in Cherokee, North Carolina, or in Mississippi, both several hours away. If sports betting legislation finally passes, Georgia would likely be a large and competitive market given Atlanta's size. It has not passed yet.
