Ohio's most important fishing asset is Lake Erie. The western basin of Lake Erie is the best freshwater walleye fishery in the world — it accounts for more than 50 percent of the North American walleye harvest in some years. Sandusky Bay, the islands around Put-in-Bay, and the open waters of the western basin produce walleye in volumes that seem implausible until you see them. Yellow perch fishing in the same water is exceptional. Lake Erie tributaries run steelhead in fall and spring.
Inland, the Muskingum River system holds smallmouth bass. The Ohio River on the southern border holds catfish and sauger.
Resident licenses cost $19. Ohio walleye fishing is one of the best fishing values in the country. A $19 license, a $20 walleye charter out of Port Clinton or Sandusky, and you are on world-class water. The Erie walleye fishery is the economic engine of Ottawa County, and the infrastructure around it — marinas, charter boats, fish cleaning stations, bait shops — is fully developed. If you move to northern Ohio within an hour of the lake, walleye fishing becomes a casual activity, not an expedition.
Lake Erie's walleye fishing is unmatched anywhere in freshwater — the lake produces 50%+ of North America's walleye harvest. Lake Erie tributaries (Grand River, Chagrin) produce steelhead runs rivaling the Pacific Northwest. Ohio's affordable license ($19) and world-class Lake Erie access make it the best value in freshwater fishing.
