Massachusetts has legitimate fishing on both ends. Cape Cod is one of the most famous striped bass destinations in the country. The rips off Monomoy Island, the Canal, and the South Shore beaches produce trophy stripers from mid-May through October. Bluefish and false albacore add speed and aggression to the fall calendar. The offshore canyons are accessible for tuna and swordfish.
Freshwater fishing is competent without being distinctive. The upper Deerfield River in the Berkshires is a legitimate fly fishing destination with a catch-and-release section that holds good brown trout. The Quabbin Reservoir holds lake trout and landlocked salmon.
Resident licenses cost $27.50. If you move to Massachusetts and fish, the Cape and the South Shore are where the serious fishing happens. The Canal in particular — 17 miles of fast current where fish stack during migrations — can produce extraordinary striped bass fishing in the right conditions. The freshwater fishing is good for a densely populated state, but the ocean is the reason.
Cape Cod's surf fishing for striped bass draws anglers from across the world. Quabbin Reservoir is a trophy trout fishery with some of the cleanest water in Massachusetts.
